U.S. Baby Names Crossing the Top 100, 2021–2024
Published September 17, 2026
The U.S. top 100 is a doorway rather than a decade-long plot. A name can spend years in the 100s and then cross in, or spend years inside and then slip out, without anyone declaring a new era. Lainey ranked 252nd among girls in 2021 (1,227 births) and 38th in 2024 (5,147). Brooklyn ranked 63rd in 2021 (3,540 births) and 108th in 2024 (2,487). Those are opposite trips through the same gate.
This article uses the 2021 and 2024 SSA extracts in this repository, both of which cover the top 1,000. It only treats names that exist as public catalog profiles. It is not a 2014–2024 revival essay. It is a three-year threshold report: who entered the top 100, who left it, and which names barely moved across the line.
Girl names that crossed in
Besides Lainey’s steep climb, girl names that were outside the 2021 top 100 and inside the 2024 top 100 include Eloise (109th to 64th), Ayla (107th to 69th), Iris (108th to 71st), Eden (121st to 72nd), Maria (105th to 74th), Maeve (124th to 75th), Daisy (134th to 76th), Vivian (102nd to 77th), Clara (101st to 78th), Liliana (104th to 80th), Lyla (110th to 83rd), Millie (174th to 86th), Josie (130th to 88th), Melody (113th to 91st), and Lucia (136th to 98th).
Clara’s move is the smallest interesting one: 101st to 78th. It was already at the door. Millie and Lainey are the other kind of entry, jumping from well below 150. Maeve, Daisy, and Lucia show vintage or Romance names crossing in together. If you liked these names in 2021 because they felt just-off-the-list, 2024 is the year that brief expired for this set.
Boy names that crossed in
Thiago ranked 141st among boys in 2021 (2,713 births) and 55th in 2024 (5,289). Enzo went from 140th to 74th. Theo went from 142nd to 80th. Walker went from 130th to 82nd. Rowan went from 105th to 71st. August went from 120th to 88th. Amir went from 123rd to 95th. Micah, Gael, Luka, Myles, and Adam also crossed in, with Adam’s move the smallest: 104th to 100th.
Thiago and Enzo are the international short forms doing the same job Luca already did at higher volume. Theo is the nickname that became a legal first name with top-100 traffic. Walker is an English surname-name walking in. These are not one fashion. They are several fashions sharing a doorway. If you wanted any of them because they were “not quite top 100 yet,” they are quite top 100 now.
Girl names that crossed out
Brooklyn, Savannah (68th to 107th), and Bella (73rd to 109th) left the girl top 100 as a 2000s-and-2010s cluster cooling together. Aubrey went from 64th to 130th. Skylar from 74th to 134th. Piper from 96th to 160th. Peyton from 100th to 168th. Nevaeh from 86th to 133rd. Serenity from 84th to 117th. Rylee from 98th to 125th. Those drops are larger than a rounding error.
Natalia went from 79th to 105th. Gabriella from 83rd to 106th. Cora from 87th to 102nd. Ariana from 88th to 103rd. Eva from 93rd to 120th. Cora, Ariana, Natalia, and Gabriella barely left. They are not collapsed names. They are threshold names. A later year can put them back inside. Leaving the top 100 is not the same thing as becoming uncommon.
Boy names that crossed out
Easton ranked 72nd among boys in 2021 and 103rd in 2024. Landon went from 73rd to 106th. Jameson from 80th to 117th. Greyson from 84th to 127th. Hunter from 86th to 128th. Carson from 97th to 123rd. Connor from 98th to 136th. Those are place-names, -son names, and 2000s staples losing enough share to fall through the floor of the top 100.
Jordan went from 88th to 104th. Nicholas from 92nd to 118th. Austin from 96th to 107th. Dominic from 99th to 108th. Xavier from 100th to 102nd. Xavier barely left, the way Cora barely left. If you are using “not in the top 100” as a uniqueness claim for Xavier or Cora, the claim is technically true in 2024 and practically empty. Two ranks are not a lifestyle.
What a three-year crossing can and cannot mean
A name that just entered the top 100 is getting more company, not getting better. Lainey and Thiago are evidence of demand. They are not recommendations. A name that just left is getting less company, not getting worse. Brooklyn and Easton are still instantly recognized. The gate is about how often you should expect overlap in a large kindergarten, not about whether the name is allowed.
Three years is also short enough to reverse. Clara was 101st in 2021 and 78th in 2024. Xavier was 100th and then 102nd. Do not build a personality around a two-rank move. Do build a crowding expectation around Lainey’s jump from 252nd to 38th, or Piper’s fall from 96th to 160th. Magnitude matters. Direction alone is a headline.
How to use the doorway
If you like a name that crossed in, plan for more overlap than you would have in 2021. Eloise, Maeve, Iris, Enzo, Theo, and August are in that boat. If you like a name that crossed out, enjoy the extra air and ignore anyone who treats 2021 as the real ranking. Savannah and Connor are still names. They are just no longer top-100 names in this extract.
The honest next step is the current year table. Browse popular baby names for 2024, then open the profiles for any name whose 2021–2024 move survived your surname test. The doorway is a crowding clue. It is not a style guide, and it is not a reason to perform originality on a three-year delta.
If two finalists both crossed in, pick the one you can say when you are tired. If both crossed out, pick the one a clerk can spell. The top 100 is a convenient line. Your child will not live inside a ranking table. They will live with a name whose current traffic you either accept or do not.
