Girl Names Ending in -lyn Still Ranking vs Fading in SSA Data
Published September 17, 2026
Evelyn still holds the 2024 girl top ten. It ranked 8th, with 9,116 births in this extract, after ranking 10th in 2019 with 10,412. The ending did not retire. Brooklyn, the other 2019 poster child of the same suffix, ranked 52nd that year (4,292 births) and 108th in 2024 (2,487). Same last three letters. Opposite crowding jobs.
This article takes 2024 SSA girl spellings that end in -lyn or -lynn, then asks which ones still sit in a high band and which ones cooled. It is not the 2021–2024 doorway essay, even though Brooklyn also left the top 100 in that window. The suffix is the filter. Rank and count are the evidence. Catalog profiles exist for some of these spellings and not others; uncatalogued SSA rows are counts only, not shopping links.
Two spellings still do top-100 work
Evelyn is the crowded classic inside the suffix. Madelyn ranked 65th among girls in 2024 (3,364 births) after 72nd in 2019 (3,568) — slightly fewer births, slightly better rank, still top 100. Those two are the entire catalog-backed -lyn set inside the 2024 girl top 100. If a list promised you a dozen currently hot -lyn names in that slice, it was counting spellings this catalog does not publish, or it was ignoring the 2024 table.
Raelynn ranked 113th in 2024 (2,412 births) and 113th in 2019 (2,564). That is a hold, not a climb: almost the same rank, a little less volume. It is the nearest catalog -lynn name to the top 100 that is not Evelyn or Madelyn. Still ranking, in the 101–150 band, is a different assignment from top ten.
Brooklyn and the Adalynn cluster are the fade inside the old top 200
Brooklyn’s drop from 52nd to 108th is the cleanest 2019–2024 fade among suffix names that were already in the 2019 girl top 200. Adalynn ranked 123rd in 2019 (2,321 births) and 163rd in 2024 (1,857). Adalyn ranked 160th (1,796) and 219th (1,411). Jocelyn ranked 199th (1,517) and 389th (808). Those four were in the 2019 extract. All four lost volume. None disappeared.
Jocelyn is the steepest of that 2019 set after Brooklyn: roughly half the births, and well outside the top 200. Adalyn crossing out of the top 200 is a threshold fade, not an extinction. If you liked these names because 2019 still treated them as current, 2024 is cooler. If you liked them as names, the extra air is the data’s gift.
Alternate spellings mostly live further down the thousand
Catalog-backed respellings in 2024 include Adelyn at 315th (974 births), Madilyn at 420th (739), Raelyn at 422nd (733), Gracelyn at 467th (666), Brooklynn at 468th (665), Jazlyn at 590th (510), Kaitlyn at 652nd (450), Marilyn at 666th (432), Rosalyn at 888th (303), Ashlyn at 908th (291), Katelyn at 931st (283), and Madalyn at 932nd (283). That is still ranked. It is not the Evelyn band.
Brooklynn with two n’s ranked 468th with 665 births while Brooklyn ranked 108th with 2,487. The extra letter did not create a new fashion. It created a quieter spelling of a fading name. Raelyn versus Raelynn is the same lesson closer to 100: 422nd versus 113th. If the brief was the sound, the busier spelling is the honest crowding. If the brief was less duplication, the thinner spelling already shows up in the table.
Gwendolyn and Marilyn are the older -lyn layer
Gwendolyn ranked 393rd among girls in 2024 (802 births) and is tagged Welsh in this catalog, with the gloss blessed ring. It does not appear in the 2019 girl top-200 extract. Marilyn ranked 666th (432) and is often described as a blend of Mary and Lynn. Those are not 2010s inventions riding the same wave as Raelynn. They are older English-facing -lyn names that still rank without living near Evelyn.
Kaitlyn and Katelyn are the 1990s–2000s Catherine/Caitlin wave now in the 650–950 band. Ashlyn ranked 908th. This catalog calls Jazlyn a modern invented name at 590th. The suffix can be vintage (Gwendolyn), mid-century (Marilyn), millennial (Kaitlyn), or recent compound (Raelynn, Gracelyn). Ending in -lyn does not tell you the decade. The rank does a better job.
SSA rows without catalog profiles still count
The 2024 girl extract also lists Oaklynn at 156th (1,898 births), Evelynn at 304th (1,013), Gracelynn at 427th (722), and several other -lynn spellings this public catalog does not currently publish. Those rows are real SSA volume. They are not name-profile links on this site. Oaklynn at 156th is the busiest uncatalogued suffix name in this year’s table, and it sits closer to Raelynn than to Kaitlyn.
Treat uncatalogued rows as crowding context, not as a second shopping list. If you needed a published profile, stay with Evelyn, Madelyn, Brooklyn, Raelynn, Adalynn, Gwendolyn, and the catalog respellings above. If you only needed to know whether the suffix still produces top-200 volume, Oaklynn’s extract row says yes even without a page here.
A suffix shortlist that respects still-ranking versus fading
Compare Evelyn and Madelyn if you want -lyn inside the top 100. Compare Raelynn if you want -lynn just outside 100 that held its 2019 rank. Compare Brooklyn, Adalynn, Adalyn, and Jocelyn if you want the 2019 top-200 members that cooled. Compare Gwendolyn and Marilyn if you want an older -lyn that still ranks without pretending to be new. Compare Kaitlyn, Ashlyn, and Katelyn if you want the millennial spellings now near the floor of the thousand.
Because so many of the catalog-backed suffix names are tagged English, English baby names are the honest next click for the spelling family. Use the hub to hear more of that texture, then return to the 2024 ranks so you do not slide from Gwendolyn to Evelyn while calling it the same project.
A -lyn name in the top ten is evidence of continued use. A -lyn name at 900th is evidence that the suffix still appears, not that it is currently hot. Brooklyn’s fall is the warning that the ending does not lock in a rank. Evelyn’s hold is the proof that one spelling can keep the door open while the rest of the family cools. Pick the spelling whose 2024 number matches the company you want. The suffix will not do that work for you.
